Oscar-bound "Precious" Pulls In a Staggering $100,000 Per Theatre

In hindsight, is this really a surprise?

Directed by Lee Daniels ("Monster's Ball"), "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire", previously received critical acclaim after winning the Audience award at Sundance and receiving a standing ovation at Cannes. Soon after, the mega-duo of Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry signed on as executive producers to promote the gritty, powerful story of an African-American girl dealing with poverty, abuse, and the struggles of becoming a young woman.

"Precious" garnered Oscar buzz early this year as a result of stellar performances by Mo'nique, Mariah Carey, Paula Patton, Lenny Kravitz, and the much talked about newcomer, Gabourey Sidibe as Precious. The movie opened this past weekend in 18 theatres and brought in an outstanding $100,000 per cinema for a total of $1.8 million. Those types of numbers are usually reserved for movies opening at 10 theatres or less. The movie is playing in limited release and is premiering at additional theatres over the next few weekends.
